A Day at the Spa with Karen Mabon

This International Women’s Day, we invited an extremely talented artist to our Spa in the APEX City of London Hotel near Tower Hill. Karen Mabon has ties to PURE Spa & Beauty both through her city of origin, Edinburgh (where PURE Spa & Beauty was established), and through Elemis skincare.

She designed a limited edition version of the best selling Pro Collagen Marine Cream in collaboration with Elemis; who are raising money and awareness for women for women‘s campaign to support survivors of war.

She visited us at 61 Mark Lane (within the APEX City of London Hotel) for an infra-red sauna, Indian head massage, Elemis booster facial and gel manicure; afterwards we caught up to have a chat about her work.

How did you get started in art?
My dad is an artist so I was always surrounded by art as a child – he was my art teacher too so it was hard to avoid art! We always went to galleries when I was young and our house was full of beautiful paintings and books so I think I just naturally developed an interest. I’ve always loved drawing but also making things too.

What inspires you as an artist?
I look at other artists work a lot; I love British pop artists like David Hockney, and I also love the softer more narrative painters like Mary Fedden and Eric Ravilious. I also love the Scandanavian textile designer Josef Frank and the Italian design house Fornasetti. I kind of just look at everything and anything really – just looking and taking in the world around me. Sometimes I’ll get inspiration from Portugese soap packaging, sometimes it will be the colours of a woman’s cardigan in a film. I think it’s about storing up these flashes of inspiration and knowing when to tap into them again!

Being a successful woman comes with its own challenges; do you feel it’s important to take time for yourself, and how do you wind down at the end of the day?
Yes definitely; when I first started my business, I worked non stop, all hours of the day. But it wasn’t productive and I never felt like I was really present in my own life, if that makes any sense?! Like I was always racing towards this intangible idea of ‘success’. I think that notion gradually unravelled and I realised that life is just happening right now and you have to make time for the things that really matter; your health and happiness, friends and family, that kind of thing.
Plus I was just getting really tired and making stupid mistakes all the time because I was trying to do too much. It wasn’t as if there was one moment when I thought, things have to change, I think I just slowly started to realise that I was missing out on a lot of important life events and fun because I thought I had to be constantly working on my business. As I started to tentatively make time to do things which weren’t work, and stopped feeling guilty about it, I realised that it was okay to do that. Better still, it made me feel better and feel excited and inspired about work again! So now I really value my down time, whether that’s having a glass of wine with friends or running or doing a yoga class. I also love really long baths and listening to podcasts! My favourites are the High Low with journalists Dolly Alderton and Pandora Sykes, the Debrief Podcast and Monocle 24: The Entrepreneurs.

Were you excited to work with Elemis on the limited edition marine cream design?
I was SO shocked and over the moon when they got in touch because I already knew the brand and was a huge fan of the products. I was also really excited to have the chance to design packaging because normally brand collaborations involve designing a scarf which is lovely but as a designer it’s always exciting to have a different challenge.

How do you feel knowing your design is helping Elemis build
awareness for Women for Women’s campaign to help survivors of war?
I’m so humbled and proud to have been involved with such an important organisation. Since we’ve been working together I’ve been able to research more about the work they do and the more I read about it, the more I want to draw awareness to what they are doing and why it’s so vital; I really do urge everyone to go and have a look on the website because there are loads of ways in which you can help victims of war rebuild their lives, from donating money to simply sharing a hashtag.

What’s next for you; are there any big projects in the works?
I have a very big collaboration I’m not able to reveal unfortunately but it will be launching in May! Apart from that we are launching our first ever swimwear collection in June which I’m really looking forward to because it’s taken ages to get it just right and to get  the quality where I wanted it to be.

Karen’s design is available in store and online at PURE Spa & Beauty now, and with this limited edition product you’re also saving 30% on Elemis’s best selling skincare product.

If you want to try the treatments Karen received, now is the perfect time with gel manicures only £25 and ALL Spa Boosters (including Indian Head massage and Elemis Facials) only £35!

5 Ways to Detox in 2018

At this time of year, everyone is talking about #Detoxing. But what does Detoxing actually mean? People describe it as cleansing their bodies from the inside out and flushing toxins from their bodies.

The good news is you don’t have to go overboard to detox your body – your liver actually does most of the work for you! So, the best way to Detox this January is to do what you can to help your liver along on the inside; and focus on cleansing your skin on the outside.

Drink Water

Drinking water is at the top of every healthcare and beauty tip list ever – and it’s not going anywhere in 2018! Water is a miracle “product” which helps your skin, your concentration, your energy and helps keeps your body functioning properly.

Your liver and kidneys will especially benefit from you staying well hydrated! You don’t just have to drink plain water; add a splash of squash if you want a bit of extra flavour.

And make sure to eat regularly throughout the day; your body needs to have a balance of sodium to remain hydrated – drinking lots of water without eating properly can actually make you feel less hydrated!

Cut Down on the Wine

We all like a drink – but after a month of parties and dinners in December, we could probably all use a break! A small amount of red wine can be good for our brains and our bodies, but excessive drinking can dehydrate the skin and accelerate the signs of ageing – and it can also cause damage to your liver, hindering it from doing its job cleansing your body.

You don’t have to quit drinking altogether; after work cocktails with the girls from the office is a time-honoured tradition after all – but when you’re at home try swapping a glass of wine in front of the TV for a soft drink or cup of green tea. Cutting down on alcohol will help your skin glow and look more radiant, and will also give your liver a break so it can focus on cleansing toxins from your body.

Pick up a new skin care routine

Taking care of your insides is important, but if you really want to feel detoxed inside and out, it’s time to take care of your skin.

Your skin will benefit from regular facials; unblocking pores and reducing the appearance of fine lines, uneven skin, dark circles and even superficial scarring. A fresh and glowing face greeting you in the mirror will really help you feel cleansed.

Another way you can take care of your skin is by exfoliating; a full body salt scrub will remove dead skin cells and leave your skin feeling soft and looking radiant from top to toe. For an extra silky feeling, include a skin wrap and let the moisturising lotion really sink in.

And don’t forget to take care of your skin at home too! Pick up an Elemis kit for your skin type, and make sure to cleanse, tone and moisturise every evening – no matter what age you are, it’s never too late (or too early!) to begin a skin routine, and you really will see a difference in how refreshed and cleansed your skin looks.

Eat Healthy

There’s no need to start a crazy diet or blend up 100 different plants in your morning smoothie in order to detox – you don’t need to flush anything out, as your liver will do that for you – but you can give it a break, so it can catch up with the backlog!

You don’t have to transform your diet overnight, but try swapping out your milk chocolate for a dark chocolate with less sugar and more cocoa, or trade your coffee for tea. It’s also a great time of year to experiment in the kitchen – give yourself exciting new challenges to motivate yourself to cook more fresh food. Try having a vegan day, or a gluten free day, or choose an ingredient you’ve never used before (like Tofu or Quinoa) to base a meal around. Another top tip is to prep and cook your food for the week and heat it up when you need it – you’ll be less tempted to eat out or order in if you have a delicious sweet potato curry in the freezer ready to go!

The less sugar, caffeine and alcohol you consume, the better your liver can do its job – and you’ll notice a huge change in how much energy you have as your body rids itself of toxins more efficiently.

Get Glowing!

One of the best ways to look and feel detoxed is to turn up the heat and open up your pores.

One of the best ways to do this is to exercise of course; because not only do you break a sweat, but exercising also releases endorphins which make you feel energized and boost your mood. The great thing about exercising is that everyone can do it at their own level; if you’re already fit, mix up your routine by doing an activity you don’t usually do. If you’re a swimmer, go for a cycle; if you’re a cyclist, go for a run! And if you have a lower fitness level that’s okay too – try a gentle walk, or for a low-impact workout try a swim or a pool based fitness class.

Of course, there are other ways to get glowing – a regular steam or sauna is also a great and relaxing way to open your pores and release impurities from the skin. For an extra deep cleanse, try an Infra-Red sauna – which gently penetrates the skin at a deeper level, and can even burn up to 800 calories in a half hour session!

The Top Benefits of Massage for Men

Massages are a popular treatment for a variety of reasons; including leisure, health and performance improvement.

This week I decided to visit massage specialist Christelle at PURE Spa‘s sleek, modern and central Edinburgh Lothian Road location, in order to find out the top benefits of massage treatments for men.

SPORTS PERFORMANCE

One of the biggest barriers to achieving top sports and fitness results is pain and injury. Christelle is trained in muscular manipulation and deep tissue massage; treatments which can greatly relieve pain and improve injuries. She explains that a Pure Spa deep tissue massage can greatly relieve tension in the muscles, and help with sports performance. She also says that massage is particularly good for intense sports such as marathon running; as participants are susceptible to injuries and muscle tears.

WORK

PURE Spas are all in central and accessible locations, and are open from early til late – meaning that it’s easy to fit in a massage around a busy work schedule. Massages also have a number of at-work benefits. It’s common to be injured at work, even in desk jobs; as workers are at risk of repetitive strain injury. As a professional remedial massage therapist, Christelle can not only improve injuries with treatment at the Spa, she can also advise on incorrect posture, and how to set up a work space to prevent further injury.

CIRCULATION

It’s not only deep tissue massages which are beneficial for men. Christelle highlights the variety of hot stone treatments on offer at PURE, as a way to combat issues such as bad circulation. Hot stone treatments can greatly relieve the symptoms of poor blood flow; a relief for anyone who is familiar with the problem of cold, tingly and even numb hands and feet.

STRESS

Stress is a serious problem for men, and can lead to mental health issues and even poor cardiovascular health. Massages are great for keeping stress under control; a relaxing massage can release stress and tension in the body, and in Christelle’s experience client’s overall moods are greatly improved with a good massage. It can help clients relax and reduce their overall stress levels.

PURE Spa offer a great variety of treatments which are especially beneficial for men. Christelle thinks the most important part of a treatment is having a professional consultation with an expert massage therapist, so that your therapist can tailor your treatment to your needs.

Leigh Graven

PURE is 15 years old so what have I learned?…

It’s 15 years since I started PURE.

I worked out I have probably spent roughly 30,000 hours working on PURE. If it takes10,000 hours to master something, I must be a super-expert by now!

At this special milestone, I have reflected on 15 things I have learned about business, life and myself through the journey so far, some good, some not so good, but on the whole I have absolutely loved the journey, the people who have been there with me, past and present, and I am excited to see what the next 15 years will shape up to be!

1.Top thing –the amazing feedback we get left by our lovely clients on a daily basis is when I know we have created a service that means a lot to a lot of people and that is a really good feeling. I especially love the comments that our clients write about their own PURE experiences which makes me realise how much of a positive influence PURE has and how we provide happiness and enjoyment to our clients which is what we are all about.  If I am feeling down, I just read some of the wonderful comments we have received and it immediately puts a smile on my face!.

2.The PURE team amaze me with their dedication to their jobs. They are the face of PURE, they handle 80,000 customer visits every year and they dedicate themselves to making every single one of them amazing!  It takes hard work, team effort and dedication to make that happen and I am immensely proud of them, their willingness to go above and beyond every single day is what makes PURE the company it is today.

3.I love the feeling of creating something new, of the endless opportunities and possibilities we have at PURE. This sustains me through all the tough times and whenever I feel down I just need to think of all the things we have created; 120 jobs, thousands of happy customers, 7 spas that weren’t there before, our product range, the £750k per year we pay in taxes which helps sustain and grow our society as a whole.

4.Employing people is the best thing I have ever done. To think that 120 people and their families are supported by PURE makes me feel immensely proud. This year alone we have welcomed 10 PURE babies into the world and it’s the greatest feeling knowing that the business helps and supports our new mums and families on their life journeys.

5.You can never stand still. To sustain you have to grow and innovate and create new opportunities. We have never stood still at PURE in 15 years and much of the creativity and innovation has been in perfecting our services, our culture, our processes, so that we can continue to grow.We have many exciting times ahead including our first spa south of the border opening in September and many other opportunities in the pipeline!

6.Having a set of values that you exist by as a company is incredibly important. You can’t sustainably create a business without them and the CEO is the gatekeeper of the values. I am very conscious now of my role in keeping and sustaining a great company culture I regard it as one of my greatest achievements at PURE.It is the foundation that holds it all together.

7.Cash is king in business, ignore it at your peril! I feel lucky that as a trained accountant, the figures come easy to me, but even now the thing I pay most attention to on a daily basis is cash.  Second is net profit.  Third is net working capital.  These three elements are essential to grow sustainably.

8.I feel like I have done everything the wrong way to start with before finding the right way!  Its easy to beat yourself up with hindsight and say, why didn’t I try that first or over-analyse where you went wrong, but what I have realised is, this stuff is hard and all you can do is try your best, live by your values and do what you think is right at the time.  And try not to beat yourself up when you get it wrong.

9.Running a business is really challenging. I would love to say it’s been a smooth journey but it has been very rocky at times. It’s made me be very careful about who we do business with.  I still believe in the saying ‘treat people how you would like to be treated’ and I like to believe that if you stay true to your values it’s the best way to be.  My duty as CEO is to always act in the best interests of the company and so in every situation, I will make an assessment of the best outcome for PURE and try my very best to achieve that outcome.

10.The buck stops with you so you need to be able to handle anything and everything that is thrown at you! You need to be resilient and adaptable. Everyone relies on you, so you need to have confidence in yourself that you can deal with any situation. I am very often faced with a situation I have no idea how I am going to resolve, but I now have 15 years’ experience and the belief that I will find a resolution to any issue because that’s exactly what I have been doing for the last 15 years!

11.I used to do everything myself and I have now learned to be very mindful what I spend my time on because it’s very limited. I constantly ask myself – is what I am doing adding value to PURE or is there a better way?

12.It’s vital to have a vision and detailed strategy for the business, it helps to focus the whole company and it’s amazing what you can achieve with a good strategy to start with. Don’t underestimate how long it takes to develop a good strategy. It takes months and months of focused work.

13.I have come to learn my own limitations, to know what I am good at and not so good at. I now focus on recruiting people who are better at the skills I am not so good at and give them great autonomy to do what they do best!  It’s had a great impact on the team and culture at PURE, and had led to some great ideas, contributions, sharing and collaborating from the team, which has helped us get to where we are.

14.It helps to have people you can go to, to have a good old moan. I call it ‘having a hippo moment’.  I have one or two people who I can call on if I need to have 5 minutes to ‘wallow in the mud’, moan, swear, be very negative.  It really helps to let all the negativity and emotions come out, once it’s out you can put it in perspective and move on.  It’s very therapeutic

15.I have learned to enjoy the journey! The journey is the best bit. I am really looking forward to the next 15 years and all the exciting things still to come!

Reducing absence: What can you do to reduce sickness days and absenteeism in your spa?

Out of Office

Staff absence is a significant problem for any employer.  In the UK alone, it is estimated that staff sickness costs businesses around £16 billion per annum.

So, what can be done to tackle this issue?  Are there things we can do to improve staff absence rates?

You will never eliminate staff absence, but I believe if you have clear methods in place to monitor, support, measure and deal with staff absence, staff members will feel more supported, empowered and secure in the workplace.  And as a result, your absence rates should reduce.

The starting point is to recognise that both employees and employers have a responsibility for staff welfare.  The individual has a responsibility to keep themselves fit and healthy to be able to work.  The employer has a responsibility to ensure a healthy working environment and to provide support to employees.  In other words, it’s a team effort to work together to find a solution.

There are many reasons for staff absence and it is important to understand the reason so that you can propose the most appropriate course of action.  Some absences have specific statutory rules and rights; such as pregnancy, maternity, long term sickness.  Make sure you are aware of any specific rights or seek professional advice if you are unsure.

Here are my top tips to help minimise absence and encourage a happy, healthy workforce!

  1. Have a clear policy in place and communicate it!

We have a written absence management policy for staff, it sets out the requirements if a staff member is going to be absent and explains the impact that staff absence has on the business, and why the company has a policy to manage it.

Our absence management policy is very simple:

Step 1 – employees must notify the company of their absence.

Step 2 – employees who have been absent from work have a ‘return to work’ meeting with their line manager as soon as they return.

Step 3 – After a number of absences, an employee will be invited to a formal investigatory meeting, conducted by their line manager.

Step 4 – if an employee has multiple investigatory meetings and/or they have not followed any of the steps agreed to reduce their absence, they may be invited to a disciplinary meeting.

This simple policy ensures that staff absence is pro-actively managed.  It also ensures everyone is treated fairly and sympathetically and communicated with at every stage.

  1. Track Absence and take action

It is important to apply the absence management policy consistently.  Make sure it applies to all employees at all levels, train managers in how to conduct effective and supportive return to work and investigatory meetings and make sure all the correct paperwork is completed and filed.

  1. Look after your employees at work

We work in spa industry so we should be the experts when it comes to taking care of our employee’s wellbeing!

We all know the common ailments that blight our industry and it is our responsibility to do everything we can to protect our staff when they are at work.

This requires a ‘no compromise’ approach.  Make sure all equipment and premises are fit for purpose and in full working order, all health and safety testing, audits and documentation are carried out in a timely manner, staff are fully trained to do the job they are being asked to do and all staff receive monthly one to one time with their manager to discuss any issues with their job.

These steps may sound rather basic, but they are vital if you expect your staff to be healthy and happy.  Many occupational health issues can be avoided by better communication, listening to staff concerns, and pro-actively resolving any ongoing issues.  A healthy workplace is a happy workplace and this in itself can have a significant impact on reducing staff absence.

  1. Take a pro-active approach

In addition to ‘the basics’ above, we also provide staff benefits such as free use of facilities, discounts on products and treatments, a monthly loyalty treatment and free flu vaccines.  This shows staff that we care about them, and invest in their health and wellbeing.  When staff see what the company is willing to do for them, they feel encouraged and motivated to take more responsibility for their own health and wellbeing.

We focus on creating a fun working environment which encourages teamwork and team participation.  For example we have a staff social fund where the company donates money every month for team nights out.  The more proud and involved and supported team members feel, the happier they feel and they are less likely to be off sick.

We also promote flexible working, as often issues arise due to an inappropriate work life balance, and a change in working patterns can make all the difference.  There is a need to have a flexible approach to each situation.

Whilst it is important to have a clear and consistent policy, we treat every staff member as an individual.  What works for one person will not work for another, and its important to take each case individually and find a solution that works for both the business and the staff member.

There is no magic bullet, but a pro-active, well communicated and supportive approach can work wonders to keep staff absence to a minimum.
